Smishing is a term made up of the words “SMS” and “phishing” and refers to a form of fraud in which criminals attempt to steal personal data from unsuspecting users by sending fake SMS messages.
Typically, a smishing message contains a link or phone number that prompts the recipient to perform a specific action, e.g. visit a website or call a number. If the user follows this request, they are redirected to a fake website or confronted with a fraudster on the other end of the line who tries to get them to divulge confidential information, such as credit card numbers, passwords or personal details.
To protect themselves from smishing attacks, users should always be careful when they receive unsolicited text messages, especially if they contain a link or a request to enter personal data. It is also advisable not to call unknown numbers or click on links unless you are sure they are legitimate. Another way to protect yourself against smishing is to install security software on your mobile device and regularly install the latest software updates.
