Skimming refers to a criminal technique in which criminals electronically steal data from bank cards in order to later make unauthorized withdrawals or purchases with these cards.
Skimming can be carried out in a number of ways, but typically criminals install a device called a skimmer on an ATM, card reader or other payment terminal. The skimmer reads the data from the victim’s card as it is entered into the terminal. Criminals can also use a hidden camera or keypad device to record the victim’s PIN number.
The stolen data can then be used by the criminals to create counterfeit cards or to make online purchases that require a card number and other details.
It is important to protect yourself against skimming by protecting sensitive information such as PIN numbers and not touching or manipulating suspicious devices at ATMs or payment terminals. If you notice suspicious activity on your bank account, you should inform your bank immediately and possibly have the card blocked.
