E-mail spoofing

A B C D E F G S T V
Email spoofing refers to a practice in which an attacker inserts false information into the sender of an email to trick the recipient into believing the email is legitimate. This is often used by cybercriminals to carry out phishing attacks in which the recipient is asked to disclose personal information such as passwords, credit card numbers or bank details.
Email spoofing is usually accomplished by manipulating Domain Name System (DNS) records, making the email appear to come from a trusted source such as a government agency, banking institution or well-known company. This type of attack can also be carried out by using fake email addresses or by compromising email accounts.
There are several ways to protect against email spoofing, including the use of email authentication technologies such as Sender Policy Framework (SPF), DomainKeys Identified Mail (DKIM) and Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting and Conformance (DMARC). It is also important never to reply to suspicious emails or open links or attachments from unknown senders.
